Will Robert is a singer song-writer from Cambridgeshire. His new single Sidelines is heavily influenced by the age of social media and is now available online.
Musik Magazine caught up with Will and asked him a few questions, we were dying to know where his influences began and just how he’s finding life as a musician.
“I first picked up my Mum’s acoustic guitar when I was 12 or 13. People like Hendrix and Jimmy Page just blew my mind with the incredible sounds they were making.”
His uncle got him a copy of Led Zeppelin’s Four Symbols album.
“I was about 10 or 11, that was a good starting point for me.”
The route of his musical influence and direction were from some of the works of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix.
“I vividly remember hearing Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Chile on a movie soundtrack and just stopping and thinking wow I’ve never heard anything quite like that before… and from that point on I wanted to make sounds with guitars.”
Finding the music industry “a cold and fickle place at times.”
Will doesn’t think that it’s easy being recognised, however he does feel passionately that “making a living from what you love doing is winning.”
He’s played the Secret Garden Party Festival several times and was thankful for the Living Room Stage and BBC Introducing Cambridgeshire for their support.
He’s had many festival successes and hopes to have plenty more but just how has he managed it?
“My song City Lights was selected as BBC Radio One’s Introducing track of the week back in 2015 and after that they asked me to play a set at the Big Weekend in Norwich which was great.”
One of his favourite songs is Little Wing by Jimi Hendrix as well as Ocean by Jon Butler. He gave us some top advice for people wanting to go in making their own music.
“Just get out and play in front of people as much as you possibly can, go busking, play open mics, book shows, throwing yourself out of your comfort zone is the only way to get better and grow.”
