Talented musician Daisy Cameron may have just released her debut EP, Escaping Matters, but she is certainly no newcomer to music. From the moment you hear her soulful voice, it is clear that you’re in capable hands. As a recent graduate from the Royal Northern College of Music, it is probably not a stretch to say that she has everything that it takes to go big.
The opening track ‘Into’ places Daisy’s emotivevoice front and centre, as she sings about her own confusion. Intricate guitars lay a dreamy, atmospheric foundation, soon joined by rich harmonies and expressive drums. It is a nice way to be acquainted with her voice as she sings “every day I wonder what it is that I’m into” with a stirring melody.
Jazz influences run deep throughout the EP and are especially prominent on the second track, ‘Her’. Understated jazzy chords support her winding, melodic vocal lines as they slowly build into a climactic crescendo of high notes and crashing cymbals.
These jazz chords act as a thread between each of the songs. ‘Way Down’ plays around with a heavy bassline over bright synths and chords. It feels chilled and the pensive lyrics are a reflection of her inner thoughts “scraping all the scraps from the same crowd”, capturing a sense of quiet disillusionment.
‘Holding On’ continues this emotional balancing act, showcasing her ability to marry vulnerability with poise. And the elegant title track, ‘Escaping Matters’. A sparse, piano-led arrangement draws us in with a gentle touch, asking you to pause and simply listen.
Reflecting on the EP on Instagram, Cameron shared that it ‘got me through a LOT of angst, confusion, heartbreak and uncertainty’. These emotions all shine through across all five of the songs on her EP.
After listening to Escaping Matters, escaping this artist will be the last thing on your mind – her bold, bright vocals pull you in and won’t let you go.
