Like everyone else in the world, when Harry Styles announced he was releasing a new single, I was feverishly anticipating what it would sound like.
Styles’ latest track, ‘Aperture’, is a slow burn, taking its time to announce itself with an intro just under a minute. When the baseline kicks in, it’s clear that Styles’ is transitioning sonically away from his established pop sound. With synths droning throughout, the track is dabbling in new territory, lightly jumping into electronic and dance realms.
Starting off soft, with minimalistic electronic hums, the track feels as if you’re stuck amongst the smoke in a crowded nightclub. Styles emerges from the crowd when the sonic layers build and guitar kicks in as the song reaches its climax with Styles chanting ‘We belong together’. It’s a slow build up to the first chorus, but once it arrives and the electronic textures bleed throughout the production, the pay off is even better for it. This track feels like the unity of people, of moving past the initial haziness of ones own ego and eventually embracing each other as one.
He’s blended elements electronic, psych and pop, all coming together to create this amalgamation of sonic that we have never heard from Styles, but is an exciting new terrain. We still hear glimpses of his previous work, but it is clear that this upcoming album is going to transition into a new space, a space that I’ll eagerly anticipating it until its release in March.
