NIGHTMARES ON WAX will release a brand new live album ‘Live at Pikes Ibiza’ on the 28th of October this year on Warp Records.
After releasing his critically acclaimed new record ‘Shout Out! To Freedom…’ on Warp Records, a triumphant return to Glastonbury, touring the UK, and working on new material, somehow he’s also managed to record a live album, at no other than the legendary Pikes in Ibiza.
Speaking about how the live album came together, Nightmares on Wax adds:
“This live album really captures the very moments we came out of lockdown and were all able to be back together and perform again, whilst having the opportunity to express all that was felt in creating it. We played this live with all the musicians from Ibiza, Haile Supreme came over from NYC after not being connected with him for a long time and we were able to perform in the legendary Pikes Ibiza. It was our first gig of the whole pandemic and was such a special feeling. To be part of the history in those walls is very special and dear to me because Ibiza is my home. This live album captures that energy and vibe as well as all the wonderful people that were chosen to join us for the event.”
As Warp’s longest serving signing, Nightmares on Wax has been consistently at the forefront of contemporary music, creating a unique blend of electronica, jazz, hip-hop, dub, funk, soul and techno.
Although 9 albums in, he may have only just truly stepped into his own groove. Lockdown forced a change of pace and offered some time for meaningful reflection and introspection. “I’ve been gigging non-stop for 10 years,” he says. “And that experience has been beautiful but it also drained me emotionally.”
He began to reassess some things. “As a creative you’re always questioning everything,” he says. “So having the time and the space has meant that I could do a proper deep dive into this stuff. So it was all about this journey of going back to myself, and realising being at home with my wife and my daughter that I’ve not really been here properly. It’s like I’ve just woken back up to what I actually have – and it’s already here.”
With a band consisting of George Evelyn aka DJ E.A.S.E, Haile Supreme, Michael Alcaras, Antonie Blakstad, Marlon Lopez, Omar Alcaide, Alessandro Doretto and Kwake Bass.
NIGHTMARES ON WAX – IMAGINEERING REVIEW
NIGHTMARES ON WAX has released Imagineering from the future live album ‘Live At The Pikes Ibiza’
The performance showcases the strength of the band’s musicality, charming beats, and a likeness to an orchestral ensemble. Remarkably executed there’s no need for after studio editing with this live performance, it’s all done right there in a precious moment.
A gradual build up of instruments, then they all join together in perfect synchronization with the drums accenting every individual sparkle and flutter of the strings.
The sounds just build up around you eventually creating a big picture of other instruments joining in and alternating within the track. You can hear every single member of the band working together on their own rhythms like worker bees humming together in a hive.
Darker aspects lurk towards the middle with rain drop sounds and a warbling effect creating a distortion to the sound but bringing it all together with a jazz soul fusion.
