“Last year we were fortunate enough to record a live album at Abbey Road Studio Two. (This is available on vinyl by the way if anyone is interested reading this.)“
The Great Leslie’s new single No Future was mixed at Abbey Road Studios the famous and influential recording studio that host The Beatles.
“We had two full days there. The first day we recorded and filmed the live album and the second day we spent writing new music (and playing Paul McCartney’s piano). The producer we were assigned back then as now mixed the upcoming EP including No Future.
(By the way, he’s worked with the likes of Elton John, Noel Gallagher and The Vaccines, so these sound accordingly.)“
The thought behind their songs – the band gave them relevant meaning, wanting to convey both reality and relatability to their listeners.
“Lyrically we wanted to write something that discusses and highlights the issues people and especially young people are facing these days.
Such as high inflation, the cost-of-living crisis that has resulted from that and the simple fact that we can’t do what previous generation such as our parents regarded as completely normal when they were our age, such as buying a house.”
The single shows contrast musically with an upbeat and positive sounding melody yet the meaning has a darker concept.
“Musically, we have packaged all of that into a very hard hitting, bouncy, yet funky song. There’s definitely a contrast there between a very serious societal issue and the fast-paced almost happy-sounding instrumentals.”
How exactly was this song created?
“The concept of ‘No Future’ and the entire EP which is called ‘repeat repeat repeat’ was very easy to develop because all of us, the band members, find ourselves in exactly that separate sections, gave them names (one was called Dave, one was called Jeff, etc) and arranged those sections after they were fully written, preventing to get lost in the “what is chorus, what is verse”- discussion.”
Their writing process was unique to the development of this song.
“This writing process was very different to what we usually do, however, usually we would all gather in our practice studio and one person would come up with an idea, with a riff, with a lyric and we would just jam it out until something comes from it. We believe that we write best when we all write our own bits rather than interfering or judging other peoples lines or rhythms.”
The Great Leslie have some plans to grow their audience by touring in the U.K and the E.U next year.
“After that, we will start recording what will be our debut album which we are planning to release fully in 2026.”
