Previously known through her work in Mhoo as part of a duo, the Nordic artist, Miriam Kjølen, will now be embarking on another new solo project, to be released under the stage name Mialuna. Having played over a thousand shows across the globe, the Mhoo duo produced a blend of country, folk and bluegrass music.
Mialuna’s own project succeeds her debut single ‘Does My Heart Even Know’ – described as “Nordic folk” that meets with “gospel” – and will be titled ‘I Never Meant To Let You Down’, available to listen on the 29th of May. It marks the return to a creative project following “major life changes, loss, twin birth, island life and the slow way back to music.”
With nearly five minutes of atmospheric sound, Mialuna blends alternative folk with indie and gospel elements – organs, heartfelt vocals and poignant lyricism, such as: “Time can heal a broken heart/ And change the way we feel about it/ I never meant to let you down”. Mialuna sets a clear path of self-comprehension, forgiveness and presence.
Previously described by Nordic Music Centre to have a voice that “draw you in and won’t let you go, like the children’s story readers on TV […], while it is sung, it is if she is reprising that role herself, conveying a salutary warning through prose.” There’s depth to Mialuna’s voice that is nothing short of pleasant to hear. Indeed, paired with a catchy tune, ‘I Never Meant To Let You Down’ stays with you like a mantra.
Aptly described as shaping “a nordic, cinematic universe, now with a clearer sense of direction”, the music becomes a “space where vulnerability and strength coexist, the “darkness isn’t removed, but accompanied by light”, and someplace where “something is released, and something else is allowed to grow”. The calm of the instrumentals, the lull of guitars make for a quiet place of healing; the hum of the choir represent feelings of companionship and support. A steady pace allows one to revel in the detailed production and tastefulness of the composition.
‘I Never Meant To Let You Down’ is a unique project that will be followed by more music, an EP, album and mini documentary to explore “time, reflection and quiet empowerment”.
For those who find comfort in music made by Of Monsters and Men, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Kiwanuka or Phoebe Killdeer will also find comfort and understanding within Mialuna’s upcoming releases.
