A city in the north of England has become one of the world’s biggest music cities. Competing with Nashville, Los Angeles, London, Berlin and so many other major cities.
‘Manchesters mayor Bev Craig has pledged for £6 million in funding towards the Manchester music scene, after a £2 pledge into rehearsal and production space’ (Taylor, 2026). This incredible statistic as of the past week has really sparked a question as to how unique Manchesters music scene is and why.
For a creative industry to need £6 million in funding to develop its core really shows for how meaningful it has become. But why Manchester? ‘Around 130 music-based venues are in Manchester from community halls to arenas’ (Tickts, 2026) this is an incredible number of venues to showcase music throughout the city. Within the centre you can find over 150 venues within a 1mile radius’ (Tagvenue, 2026) ‘whereas in London you can find 101 venues within a 1-mile radius of city of Westminster’ (LB, 2025).
So, with one of the most densely populated venue cities Manchesters unique music scene allows for growth of bands and GDP increase with popular music gigs and festivals such as Parklife.
Manchester hopefully will continue to be a unique space for the music industry, as it continues to develop with investments and popularity, I see it becoming one of the most famous and influential cities in the world.
